Stab 'em!
Fencing is chock full of weapons. Here are some brief facts about all the weapons that we normally have on hand.
Foil
Beginning weapon. The target area consists of the torso only. This is a weapon of finesse and speed... and that really annoying concept of right-of-way. Basically, right-of-way is the idea that actions come in a certain sequence and you have to 'establish right-of-way' by parrying a blade or making an offensive action in time. (And, by 'offensive action' we don't mean flipping off your opponent. That will get you a penalty in this sport. While we wield weapons and drink like fish, we do have a sense of honor.)
Sabre
Choice of barbarians. Everything above the waist is a target and, being an edged weapon, slashing is allowed. Sabre is heavily governed by right-of-way. And they also have this picky little rule about not crossing your feet, thereby, not allowing the fleche (running attack). In it's place, fencers are now using the 'flunge' which is an ingenius move of hopping on the front foot at great speed.
Epee
Screw right-of-way! The entire body is a target with epee which makes it the closest thing to real dueling you will find in competition fencing. We like to make it even more special by adding in fancy footwork and cool sound effects.
Boken
How to really intimidate your opponent. A martial arts practice weapon that can basically be described as a big stick. We sometimes twirl these around to just for warm up.
Rapier
What we really wish we could use. It's fluid and graceful and looks really great with the right costume. We just pretend we have rapiers when we fence epee.
Cutlass
Arg, matey! What else is there to say?
